Board Members: As a Words Alive board member, you will be responsible for making sure our mission is adhered to and carried out in a fiscally responsible, transparent and accountable manner. Board members provide oversight and governance and develop sound policies that keep apace with the changing nonprofit environment. Words Alive board members are passionate about our mission, dedicated to our success and committed to long-term sustainability. As a prospective board member you can expect to undertake a careful vetting process to ensure that your skills and experience are an appropriate fit with agency needs. Time Commitment: Board members commit to two years of service, attend a minimum of seven board meetings a year and serve on at least one subcommittee. Additional information about board service requirements is made available upon request.
Author's Luncheon Committee: Volunteers and committee members plan, organize and coordinate this annual fundraising event that routinely draws more than 600 supporters. Duties vary depending on assignments undertaken. Volunteering with this aspect of our organization begins when the previous event ends in October and lasts until the next event is over. Time Commitment: Committee members are asked to commit to a full year of service and can expect to commit at least five hours a month or more depending on their assignments. In the three months leading up to the event, the time commitment generally rises by at least 50 percent. Committee members must agree to attend all scheduled committee meetings and possess the ability to work as a both a member of a team and autonomously.
Development & Fundraising Committee: People with a passion for fundraising can join our Fundraising & Development Committee. In this capacity you will brainstorm new ideas, develop fundraising strategies and work on the annual fundraising and development plan. Time Commitment: As a Fundraising & Development Committee member, you must commit to attending monthly meetings, bring an open mind and be willing to work with the team to create new ways to build support for Words Alive. Fundraising and development experience and a willingness to provide your personal contacts to build our contact database are welcome but not required.
Outreach Ambassadors: As an outreach ambassador, you will work with our team to tell our story to the community at large including civic, social and professional groups. As needed, you will set up, staff, and maintain Words Alive exhibits at events. We provide the information, you provide the passion in describing the power of our literacy programs to garner support for our mission and programs.
Office Support: Office support volunteers help us with a variety of projects and tasks including answering phones, copying, filing, data entry, preparing mass mailings and helping with special projects. There are no specific requirements for this class of volunteers, although computer skills are very helpful. Time Commitment: Time commitment varies.
