Program Volunteer Awards

Words Alive is honored to recognize volunteers supporting our core programming for youth ages 0-18.

Crafter of the Year: Kerry Zisook

I volunteer for Words Alive because I understand the important role books play in the development of a child. Reading is an excellent way to access the world around you as well as escape into other worlds. It opens our minds and hearts.
— Kerry Zisook

During a global pandemic Words Alive made a quick and deliberate pivot to provide virtual programming in San Diego. We know that families thrive and discover the joy of reading when they have access to relevant books and resources. With this on mind, Kerry and her team played a vital role in helping us pack more than 1,000 learning kits filled with brand new books and hands on activities. Her tireless efforts have already made an impact reaching hundreds from Oceanside to south San Diego.

Family Literacy Program Volunteer of the Year: Peggy Ratner

I love to read aloud and bring books to life to little ones who might not have access to books if it weren’t for Words Alive.

As a former educator, native Spanish speaker, and someone who clearly loves working with families, Peggy brings an extraordinary skillset to our Family Literacy Program. She stepped up to lead our virtual sessions in Spanish, including interpreting written resources for families. In just the past few weeks, she has led virtual programming for more than 85 young children.

Read Aloud Volunteer of the Year: Jim McIlhon

Reading allows us to broaden the imagination, take us to other worlds, and deepen our sense of shared experiences, trials, and joy. If I can be a spark that generates curiosity in books and encourages reading habits at home, then our youngest cohorts can begin the journey to successful learning and discovery of their own limitless potential.
— Mr. Jim
When we asked teachers to describe Jim’s Read Aloud sessions in one word, without hesitation they said, “Engaged, awesome, fantastic, enthusiastic.” Jim started reading to one preschool class for 30 minutes each week in 2018 and now leads storytimes…

When we asked teachers to describe Jim’s Read Aloud sessions in one word, without hesitation they said, “Engaged, awesome, fantastic, enthusiastic.” Jim started reading to one preschool class for 30 minutes each week in 2018 and now leads storytimes on Facebook Live that have been viewed more than a quarter-of-a-million times!

Teen Services Volunteer of the Year: Bijan Nowroozian

Helping others has always been joyous and fulfilling to me. After graduating from college, I wanted to give back in a similar way that educators and librarians helped me while growing up in a low income, high crime community. I knew what I wanted to do, and after joining Words Alive, I was able to fulfill my goals and more.
At Words Alive, I’ve been able to help local youth learn about the wonders of literature, art, and the power they have to change the world for the better. I’ve also been able to mentor and guide recipients of the Words Alive Westreich Scholarship Program so that they have all the tools and knowledge needed to navigate college life.
— Bijan Nowroozian

Bijan understands the challenges students graduating from Words Alive’s programs and beginning their post-secondary journey face. Knowing our scholars would need additional support in the wake of the pandemic, Bijan helped create a Mentorship Taskforce, through which he leads a group of mentors and volunteers who connect with, and empower, our scholars during what has been a very challenging year.

Words Alive Westreich Scholarship & Mentorship Program Volunteer of the Year: Joanmarie Bañez

I volunteer for Words Alive because I believe in the value of seeing the light in one another and supporting each other in our community and educational endeavors. As a literature lover, student, and teacher, I enjoy working with others through the power of language and literacy!
— Joanmarie Bañez

Here are a few words from Esther, the Scholar mentored by Joan: “Joan has now become a friend of mine. She has helped me when I was struggling, no matter the time of day. She always asks about my well-being, school, and goals and listens with no judgement. I have a close friendship with her and she is an inspiration. I am thankful for being paired with an amazing mentor!”

Meher began volunteering with Words Alive in 2020 from her home in in Uttar Pradesh, India.  Meher navigates a 12-hour time difference to host virtual orientation sessions for those interested in joining our community.  She is often the first warm, joyful face potential volunteers meet.  She has single-handedly introduced 130 potential and new volunteers to Words Alive since October.

Words Alive is an organization that works hard to contribute towards educational development and this cause speaks to me on a personal level. Moreover, the organization is immensely welcoming of volunteers and their efforts. For me, each day spent volunteering for this organization is a day that is well-spent!
— Meher Gandhi

Kristina joined our Social Media Squad last year and immediately blew us away with the thoughtfulness she put into each and every social media post, as well as her consistency and reliability. Now, as our Social Media Lead, Kristina is helping to manage the 20+ other volunteers in the team by editing posts, checking in with volunteers, and brainstorming wonderful ideas for our social media platforms!

I love volunteering for Words Alive because of their tireless commitment to help our community improve and grow one of the most important skills a person can have - reading. It never ceases to amaze me how this organization goes above and beyond by working with families to help ensure their young readers have a substantial learning environment at home. I also admire how quickly and effectively Words Alive adapted to the new challenges brought on by the pandemic.
— Kristina Cox

Page Turner of the Year: Noshin Akhtar

Noshin is a super star of our Page Turners program. At just 15 years old, Noshin has reviewed 35 books for us in the past year.  Noshin shared with us that when she found Words Alive she instinctively knew she needed to join our book-loving community.  In fact, she called it the “perfect opportunity for an over enthusiastic bookworm” like her. Now, Noshin’s insight into dozens of books is helping us identify the best titles to connect other teens with stories that reflect their lived experiences.

For me, volunteering for Words Alive started off as simply a means to earn hours for the #CaliforniansForAll Summer of Service program but soon became an enjoyable pastime. Words Alive allowed me to combine the love I have always had for books and reading with my passion to help others, and I hope I continue to use this outlet for years to come.
— Noshin Akhtar

Content Volunteers of the Year: Cheryl Converse-Rath, Nanditha Krishnan, Vivian Lin, Marcus Weber

In the past year, volunteers supporting the exploration of new titles and the development of curriculum for use in our programs serving toddlers, school-age students, teens, and families grew from 20 to more than 100 volunteers. This group is led by a remarkable group of volunteers: Cheryl Converse-Rath, Nanditha Krishnan, Vivian Lin, and Marcus Weber.

Together, these four volunteers help us produce high-quality curriculum and track dozens of curriculum projects in progress. Their collective leadership has enabled Words Alive to produce dozens of brand-new curriculum guides and Write Now prompts in the past year.

Cheryl Converse-Rath leads our Curriculum Writers developing content to help volunteers and educators introduce new titles to students.

“I volunteer for Words Alive because I love reading and writing, and getting to know people who love it as much as I do. As a former teacher, I want to make things easy for teachers and help kids get all they can out of books.”
— Cheryl Converse-Rath

Nanditha Krishnan manages the Curriculum Editors to finalize curriculum guide drafts and provide feedback to Curriculum Writers.

“I volunteer with Words Alive because I really enjoyed reading as a kid and I was really interested in the idea of an organization that helped kids of all ages love reading too. I ended up joining the curriculum team when I learned that Words Alive was making guides for all ages and genres of novels. I really love the idea that these guides have questions about novels that I would have loved to read for fun, that create discussion on important topics in out society. As a high schooler not a lot of the people I meet love reading for fun outside of standard school curriculum, so I love that Words Alive goes above and beyond to make novels a wonderful experience!”
— Nanditha Krishnan

Vivian Lin leads our Curriculum Designers to produce high-quality, polished, brand-aligned, and formatted curriculum guides.

I found Words Alive when I was looking for online volunteer opportunities during COVID. I am very glad that I found Words Alive because I just love the message the organization is spreading across local communities as well as how passionate everyone on the team is! Overall, volunteering with Words Alive has been a very rewarding and enriching experience!
— Vivian Lin

Marcus Weber manages the volunteers working on our Write Now platform to create engaging and interesting writing prompts that help teens process and cope with current events.

I volunteer with Words Alive as a way of passing on the joy of reading and the advantages of literacy with those who may not have been gifted these things from birth.
— Marcus Weber

Organizational Awards

Every year, Words Alive recognizes volunteers and partners that have made significant contributions to our organization.

Corporate Partner of the Year: Ernst & Young

We volunteer for Words Alive because we believe in helping young and underserved people develop the mindsets and skills they’ll need to find and sustain meaningful work. The realities of the digital divide, which have only been worsened by the pandemic, makes supporting underserved and under-represented youth more important than ever. And we are proud to do so through Words Alive!

Rookie of the Year: Gayle Early

When I was little, books saved me. When I was big, books saved me! A good book is a magic carpet ride that can woosh you away to new places and introduce you to interesting characters, all in the theater of your own heart and mind. I want readers to be able to travel anywhere they wish to explore, enjoy learning, and reap the lifetime benefits from the magic and wisdom of reading good stories.
— Gayle Early

Gayle joined Words Alive in the summer of 2020 with one question—“how can I help?” Since then, Gayle has delivered books and supplies around San Diego County, distributed books at the Armed Services Neighborhood Exchange, and supported the Family Literacy Program. Gayle’s passion for literacy and connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading knows no bounds. For that reason, Gayle is one of our Rookies of the Year!

Whereas most volunteers start in our programming, Nick joined Words Alive by stepping up to serve on our Board’s Finance and Audit Committees this past summer.  Combining his passion for education and reading, and his expertise in financial management, Nick is helping to ensure that Words Alive will be a stable member of our community for years to come.

I volunteer for Words Alive because I feel strongly about the organization’s mission. I think the world becomes a better place when our youth can more readily access the gift of reading. The people at Words Alive are committed and caring people who work to give children that gift, so I’m proud to help them in any small way I can.
— Nick Giordano

Volunteer of the Year: Sandy Connolly

A kindergarten teacher in a previous life, Sandy started volunteering with Words Alive in 2016. From her start with us as a classroom reader in first grade at Golden Hill, to her current role reading stories live on Story Station, which reaches tens of thousands of children and families around the globe each month, Sandy exemplifies the heart and soul of Words Alive.

For years, the Words Alive staff has looked to Sandy as a vital part of the team – using her academic expertise to guide our organization forward. When COVID turned the educational landscape upside down, Sandy didn’t let a moment pass by. As so many were struggling to figure out how to stay connected, Sandy leaned into her service with Words Alive and helped, in every corner of the organization, to bring words and stories alive for children and grownups alike.

Just this past year, Sandy has written curriculum, mentored other volunteers, coordinated storytimes, supported our corporate partners with custom videos and communications, reached out to hundreds of educators via social media to let them know about Words Alive’s new resources, and the list continues. In, fact, we struggle to think of a corner of Words Alive where her presence and leadership aren’t felt.

Sandy C.jpg
Why do I volunteer at Words Alive? Because making connections with children while reading always lifts my spirits and feeds my soul! The impact of reading and listening to great stories improves memory and increases our imagination. It allows us to explore new topics, increase awareness, and helps us to understand others. Last but not least, I volunteer at Words Alive because it inspires readers and writers to go on new adventures anywhere, anytime!
— Sandy Connolly

We're proud to celebrate Melinda Wynar who was recognized by Molina Healthcare as a Community Champion this past Fall for her leadership and service to our community! Over the last six years, Melinda has been a dedicated volunteer for many different Words Alive initiatives, from the Read Aloud Program to the Authors Auction, and her commitment to her community continues to shine through her actions every day. We're so grateful for Melinda! Read more about her on our blog.

Words Alive Board Chair: Andrea MacDonald

For the past two years, Andrea MacDonald fearlessly led our organization as the Chair of our Board of Directors. She led us through Executive Director transitions and an uncharted pivot into a virtual space. Upon the conclusion of her term as Chair, she continues to serve the organization on the Board and leadership committees.

In honor of her service, Words Alive has distributed new books in Andrea’s name to families at the Lindsay Community School for pregnant and parenting teens.

Andrea, we deeply appreciate your service and leadership. Thank you for enabling us to inspire our next generation of readers!
