A Community-Powered Investment in Literacy and Belonging
Words Alive is entering a new chapter of leadership and expansion. Last year, we reached 6,392 children, teens, and families, a 46 percent increase from the previous year. Demand continues to grow, especially in communities where access to books remains limited
THE CAMPAIGN: THE SPINE NAMING INITIATIVE
At the center of our East Village space is a new large-scale bookshelf mural, believed to be the largest of its kind in San Diego. Within it are nearly 300 blank book spines.
Each spine is an opportunity to invest in literacy and leave a lasting mark.
Through the Spine Naming Campaign, donors can dedicate a spine with a name, message, or tribute. These spines will become a permanent part of our space, forming a collective reflection of the community that powers this work.
Giving Opportunities:
Small Spine: $1,500
Large Spine: $2,500
Extra Large Spine (Book Covers, 4 available): $5,000
Open Pages (2 available): $10,000
Read Aloud Seasonal Naming Sponsorship (3 available): $25,000
Family Literacy Program Coordinator Sponsorship (2 available): $50,000
WHY THIS MATTERS NOW
This year:
Over 5,000 families received multiple new books, building home libraries
3,400 children engaged in weekly Read Alouds that strengthen comprehension and confidence
1,358 caregivers were trained to support literacy at home
We are seeing real growth in families reading together and children building confidence. And still, the need continues to outpace our resources. Thousands of children in San Diego lack consistent access to books and literacy support. Each spine purchased translates into books in homes, shared reading experiences, and stronger family literacy practices.
This campaign also provides critical support during a pivotal moment of transition, ensuring Words Alive can sustain and expand its work with intention and stability.
AN INVITATION
This campaign is an invitation to be part of something lasting. Each named spine represents an investment in a child’s access to books, in a family’s ability to read together, and in a more connected community.
Together, these spines will form a permanent reflection of the people who chose to show up for literacy in San Diego. We invite you to claim your place on the shelf and help ensure that every child has the tools and inspiration to read, learn, and thrive.
