PRESS RELEASE: “Concentric Community” Exhibit Open Through October 16

Collaborative Art Project of Words Alive, ArtReach & San Diego Public Library

SAN DIEGO, California (September 28, 2021) –  Demonstrating the resiliency of San Diego’s youth, a moving new collaborative art exhibit, “Concentric Community” is on display at the Mission Valley Public Library through October 16.

Organized by San Diego nonprofits Words Alive, ArtReach, and the San Diego Public Library, this year’s Art & Lit Exhibit engaged 1,210 youth learners to connect reading, writing, and art through the creation of “Identity Circles.” The curated exhibit includes artwork submitted by 250 students across San Diego.

Words Alive Executive Director Rachael Orose says the collaborative partnership between Words Alive, Art Reach San Diego, the San Diego Public Library, and 23 community partners was critical to the success of this year’s project.

“As young people continue to struggle with uncertainty, disconnection, and trauma caused by the ongoing COVID pandemic, this project provided an opportunity for students and families to connect through reading, writing, and art. It’s a testament to the strength of San Diego that so many partners, volunteers, and families came together to amplify the voices of our community’s young people,” said Orose.

Annually, Words Alive spearheads an Art & Lit project designed to help students connect concepts from literature to their lives, through art. This year’s selected books featured characters battling loneliness on their journey to discover themselves, and included: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

Inspired by painter Alma Thomas’ masterpieces, ArtReach developed the “Identity Circle” concept providing an opportunity for students to develop mindfulness habits and emotional awareness in the creative process.

San Diego Public Library was a key distribution partner, enabling families throughout the county to access the project.  Libraries distributed kits including this year’s anchor texts and art materials for students to make their “Identity Circles” at home.

“Unable to engage with our youth as we did pre-Covid, the Art & Lit Project provided the Library with the opportunity to connect youth in our communities to this engaging and impactful project,” said Emily Derry from the San Diego Public Library. “We are honored to see the students’ authentic artwork come to fruition through pieces that reflect the journey and experiences of our talented youth.”

If you're reading this newsletter, you probably know that books are essential in supporting a young child's growth. We also know that too many children from underserved communities in San Diego are at home without books of their own during this pandemic. Words Alive, the Molina Foundation, the San Diego Council on Literacy, and the San Diego Public Library all came together this past week for The Great San Diego Book Giveaway, a campaign that resulted in 325 families (all of whom participated this spring in the remote version of our programming) taking home brand-new books for the entire family to enjoy!

Learn more about the event here on our blog and donate to help children and families build their home libraries!

For the 5th year in a row, we’ve partnered with United Way of San Diego for Readers in the Heights, a collaborative effort between multiple San Diego organizations to engage families in weekly literacy and self-expression activities to help prevent the summer slide. This year, the program is more important than ever due to COVID-19 and the learning losses expected from transitions to distance learning. This is exactly why we’ve partnered with the staff from the Karen Organization and City Heights CDC to deliver our tested programming to families.

Even more exciting! Programming is taking place in five languages including Karen and Burmese. Do you want to help us translate our resources into different languages? Take a look at our new virtual volunteer opportunities!

Summer Reading Book Drive

It is Reading Awareness Month in San Diego and to help share the importance of reading, Words Alive is participating in a summer reading book drive to benefit the libraries of San Diego.

“More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher – income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities. As a result, low-income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college."

Low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement over the summer months. Books collected will be distributed to students by the San Diego Public Library to ensure they are able to keep up with their reading over the summer.

To announce this new endeavor, on April 19th Words Alive brought a Read Aloud Program classroom from Washington Elementary to the City Council Meeting. Our students were so excited to learn about what goes on at these meetings and shared their love of reading with the City Council. Madeline from the third grade class addressed the Council and shared, “reading is important because it lets you go places.”

In partnership with Council member Lorie Zapf, City of San Diego, United Way of San Diego County, and the San Diego County Public Library The Summer Reading Book Drive will run through May 31. We will have a collection bin here at Words Alive and keep a look out for bins at your neighborhood public library and select City Administration buildings in San Diego.

As part of our commitment to make reading matter to everyone, we want to encourage all of the work being done in San Diego that supports our mission, “to open opportunities for life success by inspiring a commitment to reading!”
